DAVID MALAKER

David Malaker (b.1992) is a painter, based in Kolkata. Post-graduation in 2018 from Benaras Hindu University, his recent paintings explore the night scenes, the enigma of darkness lit by the light of the yellow lamp. Working mainly with charcoal and pastel on paper, he portrays the nocturnal sights mixed with imagination and fantasy. The myriad appearances of the world in the darkness have found stories and meaning in his paintings, which offer a deeper understanding of our contemporary time. David has exhibited his works in his solo show at the Society of Contemporary Artists’ gallery 2018. He participated in many group shows including: Metaphoric Identity at Gandhar Art Gallery kolkata in 2022, Aroh, Emami Art Open Call Exhibition curated by Ushmita Sahu in 2020, Strides at Stake curated by Ayan Mukherjee, Art Multi-Disciplines Gallery, Kolkata in 2020, Emerging Palette at Shirsti Art Gallery, Hyderabad (2019); Sixty Years of the Society of Contemporary Artists at Akar Prokar, Kolkata (2019); Scholars’ Exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi, Kolkata (2019). He was awarded National Award by Lalit Kala Akademi New Delhi, Government of India in 2020, Scholarship from Jogen Chowdhury Center for Arts in 2022, Shristi AIF Grant, Hyderabad in 2020; Lalit Kala Research Grant Scholarship 2018, National Young Artist Scholarship from Ministry of Culture 2018, Bronze Medal by Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation in 2018, Birla Academy Award in 2017 and Rajya Charukala Puraskar, Kolkata in 2017. David lives and works in Kolkata, West Bengal.
